A Simple Hunter 707 Tuning Guide
You don't need to overcomplicate your setup. The key is to start with a consistent base setting and make sensible adjustments as the wind changes.
Upwind – light winds
In lighter conditions, the aim is to keep the boat moving.
Keep enough depth in the sails to generate power and avoid over-sheeting the jib. The mainsail should have a relatively open leech, allowing the boat to accelerate rather than simply pointing too high.
Think flow and speed first.
Upwind – medium winds
As the breeze builds, start to flatten the sails and reduce heel.
Use your controls progressively rather than making big changes all at once. A little more backstay and appropriate jib tension can help maintain a stable sail shape as the loads increase.
This is often where good communication between helm and trimmers makes the biggest difference.
When it gets windy
As the wind increases further, keeping the boat flat and balanced becomes increasingly important.
Flatten the mainsail, control the leech and depower progressively. Don't wait until the boat is consistently overpowered before making adjustments.
A well-balanced boat is easier to steer, faster through the water and generally easier to keep in the right groove.
Downwind
The spinnaker should be trimmed to keep it working rather than simply pulling it in as hard as possible.
Watch the luff, communicate constantly and adjust the sheet to the changing wind angle. Small, regular adjustments are usually faster than large corrections.
Most importantly, keep the boat moving and look ahead for pressure and opportunities to sail lower or faster.
